Steve Jobs and the Phase 1 Dynamics
Topics: apple, business game, business success, next inc., pixar, pixar animation studios, steve jobs
The picture to your left is of Steve Jobs, top guy at Apple and Pixar Animation Studios.
If you've been following the news, you probably saw that he has taken a leave of absence as CEO of Apple for health reasons.
Now, before I continue, let me make it clear that I'm a HUGE fan of Steve Jobs. In Fact, I once tried to go to work for him with a company he created called Next, Inc., but wasn't hired. He is and always will be one of my biggest entrepreneurial heroes.
His life is also a fantastic example of the Phase 1 dynamic that you can't ever truly "win" The Business Game.
I don't know what Steve's net worth is but it must be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. In recent years, he has been behind a gigantic turnaround of Apple as a company. He has participated in or been responsible for some of the greatest technological innovations in this century. He also was key in the emergence of Pixar as a major force in the film and animation industry. He's just 53 years old!
From one perspective, the perspective most people view the world from, you could not possibly be a bigger "winner" of The Business Game or The Money Game than Steve is. But if you're playing in Phase 1 of The Human Game, there must always be some sort of "fly in the ointment" that prevents you from really "having it all." So what's Steve's fly?
Health!
He has struggled a lot in his life with health issues, most notably pancreatic cancer. Here's Steve's announcement to Apple's employees and the world at large about his decision to take a leave of absence:

It's only when you begin playing the Phase 2 game and knock out enough of the Phase 1 "cloud cover" that you can truly have it all and actually win The Business Game and The Money Game without having flies in your ointment.
I wish Steve a speedy recovery and return to the active pursuit of his passions, if that is indeed part of his plan.

I, too, love Steve and the amazing work he has done with Apple over the years. I have been an Ã…pple fanatic since the beginning, and am still one.
I bought two of the Apple 21st Centry computers, which I eventually sold - but they were the forefront of today's iMacs, and way before their time!
I wish him the best in life an health, and hope a full recovery - he is too young to leave here, and we need his creativity!
aloha,
francesca
He is an extraordinary creation who has supported my journey in so many ways!
