Cool Time Management Strategy ...

todo2.jpgOK, this isn't a "radical" strategy, but it's a solid one that has served me well throughout the years as it relates to time management. It seems obvious, but I don't know many people who employ this simple strategy.

Whenever I have a bunch of to do items on my desk, I do an initial sort of them into piles based on:

  • What tasks must I do all by myself?
  • What tasks do I play a part in but others must contribute to?
  • What tasks must others do all by themselves?
Then, here's what I do:

  • If someone else needs to get it done all by themselves, I hand those items off first
  • If I need to get part of it done, then hand it off to someone else to finish or contribute, I do my part, then hand those off too
  • Then I focus 100% on the items I must complete myself in high productivity mode, pausing from time to time to work on something I passed off that comes back to me for further attention.
This way, while I'm working in high productivity mode, the other people are working on their parts or tasks simultaneously which gets everything done more quickly.

Try it, you'll like it!

Great advice. I really need to learn to delegate more often.

Great article. I'd love to know your thoughts on work/home balance strategies.

Thank me thank you Robert. This is great support for me as I begin to feel the inner push to work from home and having created the illusion of being overwhelmed in the past in phase 1.

Yep. I still use this "technique," even in Phase 2. I get a kick out of the elegance of it.
